Now this is interesting. Here's a video tour of the upcoming UIQ 3-powered Sony Ericsson G900 (below the break). Watch it. Then watch it again a few more times, there's a lot to take in that I for one haven't seen before on UIQ 3. And all very iPhone-esque - which I guess is a compliment, looks like S-E and UIQ have been burning the midnight oil - now we just want to see the hardware out in the real world.

I was interested to see (and apologies if this sounds like an Expansys advert) the Nokia N81 8GB in their stock clearance already, at £215 plus VAT. We know the N81 had some flaws (and Nokia geek agrees), but to be sold off this early? Also noteworthy is that the E90's had a price cut, to a (slightly) more palatable £460 plus VAT. If you've seen any 'net bargains, do please comment!

Michael Mace has written an interesting post on his blog Mobile Opportunity about the fall of (native) Mobile Applications. The basic thesis of the post is that native mobile development is declining because of platform fragmentation, issues around certification, and marketing problems. Michael goes on to suggest that mobile development itself is not dead, but that it will increasingly move to the web as a platform. Read on ...

3D graphics benchmarks aren't the 'be all and end all' when it comes to games playing performance, but they're a good clue as to how capable a device is. So it was interesting to find out about a regularly updated and bookmarkable table of OpenGL ES benchmarked smartphones. It's topped by the 'if you believe Nokia' obsolete N93 and the N-Gage 1st access smartphone, the N81, comes in a lowly 22nd. Read on for comment.

Push email specialist emoze seems to be improving in all areas. Their free push service has just been extended to anyone with any POP3 account (i.e. no GMail or Exchange needed). And, unlike the GMail dedicated client, this one's native Symbian OS, so it's faster and leaner. Well worth checking out if you've been lusting after push email but didn't know how to get started.

Glad to see the Nokia E90 is not totally forgotten. There's now an official guide (warning: PDF link) to tweaking an S60 application's UI to work effectively on the 800 pixel wide screen of the Communicator. Shows it's not as simple as setting screen width to a bigger number, anyway!

More good news for prospective Vodafone users, as they drop their 3GB/month data plan to £15 (reports SMS Text News). It's a long contract (18 or 24 months) but it does come with a USB 3G modem. No word if this will be available to existing users with data enabled handsets, but it's a sign that data pricing is definitely on its way to becoming a commodity, rather than a luxury, on people's monthly bills.

OK, I give in. After numerous complaints about the video formats used in my Smartphones Show video podcast, I've reverted to plain old H.263-encoded MP4, which should mean that the show now plays again on everything from a lowly Nokia N70 to a Sony Ericsson P900 and upwards - so virtually everything. Show 52 is out today and includes my run down of the top S60 apps, plus reviews of the Palm Treo 500 and the Blackberry 8310. Here's ...

Late yesterday Motorola announced that it was considering a 'structural and strategic realignment of its business to enhance shareholder value'. Motorola is exploring its options in order 'to better equip its Mobile Devices business business to recapture global market leadership'. The company is considering spinning off or selling its Mobile Device division, but no final decision has been made and the mobile phone division may yet ...

the Orange and Black Corner, Sony Ericsson’s W960 Walkman phone – also

Yes, the 3rd party app that started tongues wagging months ago,

Mobitubia, is now out, rivalling newcomer emTube, of course. It seems

to be freeware, too, and has a sumptuous interface. Link, comments and

screenshots below.

Here's Mobitubia's home page.

Performance seems on a par with emTube, perhaps not surprisingly. On

slower devices like the E61 it's ...
